Rants and Raves

That, my friends, is a picture of Orlando sitting atop one of the apples growing on the apple tree on our back terrace. The picture was taken a couple of months ago, but the apples are finally ripe and ready to eat. In fact, one is baking right now in the form of a simple puff pastry apple tart. I grew up with my own orange tree, but this is the first time I’ve had my own apple tree! If this tart goes well, I’ll have to try my hand at making the traditional Dutch appel taart. The crust of those is to die for!

So that’s the rave part of the title. Now the rant. Albert Heijn, the grocery chain we usually go to, doesn’t seem to be stocking cumin powder anymore, just the cumin seeds. I use the powder so often that I’d prefer to have the powder already made and not have to grind my own. Today, Lizzy kindly suggested I check the Conimex brand, since they make their own cumin powder, just with an Indonesian name. I think Merian was even suggesting Conimex might have a chili powder, too. Unfortunately, when I went to AH today, not only did they still not have their usual brand of cumin powder, they now no longer seem to stock any of the Conimex products other than the kroepoek. (Thank heavens they at least still have those lovely little addictive morsels!) Tomorrow, I’ll either head over to the tokos (Chinese shops) over by Hoog Catharijne, or I’ll see if Plus (the not quite so nice supermarket) or Super de Boers (the slightly more expensive super market) at least carry cumin powder. I’ve heard that AH seems to like to get rid of the products that are most enjoyed; it’s seeming more and more to be true. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Now excuse me while I go take the apple tarts out of the oven!

  1. Ho ho ho… Which AH did you go to. The tiny one at the Voorstraat? The small one at the Burg. Reigerstraat? Or the good ole chunck ‘o big’uns in Winkelcentrum Overvecht?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

    • The tiny one on Voorstraat used to carry the stuff, as did the one on Nachtegaalstraat, which we tried on Sunday. No luck there, either. I’ve yet to go to the one at the Winkelcentrum Overvecht. Depending on the weather, I’ll probably just do my shopping at Super De Boers today. Surely cumin hasn’t completely disappeared from the eastern edge of the centrum!

  2. Oh, it’s lovely to grow your own fruit, isn’t it. THis year actually I’ve been able to enjoy harvesting my apples. We have two apple trees but because we usually fly to Argentina for our usual visit at this time of the year, we never get to eat our apples. This year we’ve had so many and delicious, too! We’ve made apple crumble (with vanilla ice cream mmmm!), apple compote and Dutch apple cake a couple of times. And our bunny just loves them too.
At the C1000 I am pretty sure they always have cumin powder in stock – don’t you have one nearby?

    • That’s great that you finally get to enjoy the apples this year! I’ve been thinking about making an apple crumble, too. Last night’s apple tart was delicious!

Unfortunately, no, we don’t have a C1000 nearby. At least, there are enough other stores much closer that I’m hoping will have the cumin.

    • I did find some cumin, finally, and my usual store seems to be carrying it again, so all is right with the world. In fact, it was the Conimex version that I eventually bought.
