Just Another Year

I just don’t like the New Year celebration. Never have. I don’t like the forced pressure of it, whether looking back, looking forward, or simply celebrating. So no end-of-year lists from me or resolutions.

Have fun, eat, drink and simply enjoy the moment. Our oliebollen are purchased, champagne is chilling and the ragú for the lasagna is bubbling away. If you’re in the Netherlands, try not to get blown up by all the fireworks! We’ve got mini ones going off in the street outside our house as I type. At least it’s keeping the dog and cats entertained! They’ve been staring intently out the window at the action below.

Happy Hogmanay and I’ll wish you a gelukkig nieuwjaar tomorrow!

  1. Oh, I do like the celebration part – I don’t like the making resolutions, looking back and forward thing … And I do like the little traditions like eating oliebollen and having something special for dinner, for example.
Enjoy your lasagna and the oliebollen and have a lovely evening! Despite all the noise and terrible smell of gunpowder outside! :o)

  2. Oh, I like the food and champagne part of the celebration! The staying up to midnight when I’m tired, not so much. We didn’t make it to midnight, although I was still awake and then had to try to comfort the dog who does NOT like the noise of the fireworks. Still, it wasn’t a bad evening, and I had oliebollen to look forward to this morning!

I hope you had a wonderful celebration last night and that today is a great start to an excellent year! Gelukkig nieuwjaar!

  3. We never do anything on NYE either, partly because we really don’t do the whole party thing and also because we live in the city and don’t want to leave our anxious dogs home alone during WW3.

We stayed home, ordered some food, watched a movie, played some wii and took some photos. It was the perfect NY for us!

  4. I don’t usually like looking back and making resolutions either. This year was just a little bit different I think, because I made a real turning point in my life. It took so long to get out of a bad place and I guess I’m just a little amazed at how happy I am at the moment. Resolutions I think are a little bit of a set-up; if you want to do something, just do it, do it when you are ready and don’t make yourself a promise that you can’t keep or aren’t ready to make, KWIM?

So yeah, it’s nice to celebrate with the ones you love, eat, drink, be merry and be thankful for the love around you 🙂

    • Oh, I can absolutely understand looking back if you’ve made a big change — in one form or another — over the past year. Last year was bigger for me, in that I’d moved to another country, something I’d always wanted to do. This year just didn’t have the same impact on me. There were certainly high points, as well as low points, but retrospectives tend to make me weepy, even if they’re happy. I try not to intentionally make myself cry. 😉

And I absolutely agree about the resolutions. As Nike says, “Just do it!” no matter what the date is! But ultimately, you do have to be mentally ready to commit. If that’s a Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in March, so be it.
