World Cup Madness

Orange Flags
It’s arrived. The day of the World Cup final match, and the Dutch are playing tonight, hoping to win their first World Cup title. Oranjegekte (Orange Madness/Fever) is everywhere, with most people on the streets wearing some orange somewhere.

Oranjegekte [Day 184/365]We’ve been somewhat superstitious throughout the tournament, wearing the same outfits and same bits and pieces of orange, usually in the form of a Beesie or four. I’ve got a bracelet I made from some Beesies, and since it’s also been unusually hot recently, I’ve been using Beesies to pull my hair back in bunches. I’ve also got my orange scarf with a few Beesies wrapped around it.

G has his orange shirt and a Beesie that he tends to wear hooked over his ear. We’re ready to go, even though I don’t want it all to be over. The celebrations and festivities and cheerfulness that I’ve seen so far have been so very fun. I don’t know what we’ll do with ourselves once it’s all over!

So wherever you are, wear some orange and support the Dutch team today. I want to see what it’s like to live in a country that has just won the World Cup! It’s been fascinating just seeing the celebrations through the various stages.

Hup Holland Hup!

  1. Will be watching and cheering on Holland, although perhaps not vocally (there’s a few Spanish students in Newcastle who might object), I’l be providing spiritual support. I also have a chronic lack of orange clothes, but I’ll try and find something that might potentially look like orange from a distance. Good luck!

  2. I think as the world cup went on I gathered more and more orange about my person. It’s a good thing it has come to an end in a way otherwise at the rate I was going I might have ended up in orange body paint.

It’s a putty though. It would have been so great to see Holland win but I don’t hold a grudge (except against that ref)

  3. Oh wasn’t it so sad šŸ˜¦ and I’ve seen too much FB chatter about the Dutch playing dirty..sure I’m biased but Hello haven’t these people watched soccer before? They all get dirty!!!
I’m with you on the cheerfullness factor..it feels a little somber today šŸ˜¦

    • I’ve tried to avoid any comments today about the match, since the little I’ve seen has been silly. Was De Jong lucky not to get a red card? Of course. But everyone else is complaining that the Dutch were unusually rough, as if all football players are delicate little snowflakes. Plus, the whole job of midfielders is to get in there and play both offensively and defensively. Van Bommel is hardly the monster people have been making him out to be. And when it comes to the ref, he might not have given out some red cards to the Dutch, but he was also quite stingy about giving them to the Spanish who should have been booked more than they were. That doesn’t even cover the mistake at the end of the game with the corner kick that wasn’t given and the possible foul before the goal. Oh! And complaining about the Dutch players diving? Which game were they watching? I think they got their colors mixed up. It was the Spanish team that was hitting the ground in mortal pain from the breeze of players passing them! šŸ˜‰

Hmm. I guess I was a little more upset about it all than I realized. šŸ˜‰ I guess I needed to get that out. All smiles now!

Now what am I going to do with all these Beesies? šŸ˜€

      • You’re cracking me up..I also went on a tirade via e-mail to my BF in the US..we know the same people making the FB comments…arrghhh…I typed 2 different snarky remarks before deciding to just walk away..take a little step back šŸ™‚

        • Oh, I’m glad I’m not the only one! I’ve generally tried to avoid the internet as much as possible today. I can handle losing; it’s the outrageous claims (by the fans of the winners!) that upset me. You won! What more do you need! And if you didn’t care enough to really support either team, then just hush! šŸ™‚

I am going to miss all the neighborhood decorations. If tomorrow really is cooler like it’s supposed to be, I might head out and see if some of the nicer displays are still up. I need to find out when the parade is for the team returning, too. I assume it will be on tv.

  4. I’m too late now to comment here – but I’m very sorry the Dutch didn’t win. In my head, having been twice already in a WC final and losing, was enough merit for me to think that THEY deserved to win more than the Spanish. I was happy for Spain, of course…. but I somewhat had lost interested already when Argentina was sent back in shame….
    Oh well, there’s always Brasil 2014!!!! šŸ˜€

  5. I’m getting a bit pissed off how all these (new) fans are smack talking about the Dutch team, especially since prior to the final a lot were praising them. Since most only watch and follow the games when the World Cup is on, they have no clue how dirty it can get in the 4 years in between. I better avoid a certain thread in a certain forum!!

Do they even have an inkling how they usually play?! I mean the the UEFA Championship is about to start and the European Cup is also around the corner. Same players in different teams. But no, apparently the Dutch team is only whining about their loss and they are sore losers.

Also putting the blame solely on the Dutch team is completely unfair, because Spain was definitely no saint in the game either. And Webb was ridiculous.

    • Oh, I made the mistake of reading some of the comments after the game. The condescending, holier-than-thou, know-it-all nature of some comments raises my blood pressure every time. Seriously, do they have any clue of how football is played? I’ve watched enough European league play over the years — and even attended the Inter-Milan derby, which was no half-assed friendly match — and the kind of play during the WC was nothing new.

And yes, we got lucky that a few calls weren’t made, but that doesn’t completely mean that the Dutch deserved to lose. There were a LOT of mistakes at the end of that game (on the ref’s part) that truly did possibly rob the Dutch of the win or at least a chance at the final penalty kick round. I truly don’t understand how the Spanish played such a better game when the Dutch held them scoreless through the whole thing and had quite a few chances of their own. It was a fairly even match, so I don’t get how Spain was the obviously superior side.

Yup, still bitter. I’ve been trying to avoid that thread, too. šŸ˜‰

      • That’s why we all thought the matches in general were so boring. LOL
Almost any UEFA match has more action and antics than in this World Cup.

No great football was shown by most teams, so how some of the new admirers of the game can all of a sudden be an expert based on viewing this Cup alone is just frustrating. Besides I usually can’t take any them seriously when they keep on calling it soccer. šŸ˜‰
