Windmill Surprise

Molen De Ster
I’ve written before about windmills here in Utrecht, but never about the Molen De Ster (the Star Windmill). Before we moved here, I started following the Utrecht Flickr group and saw the Molen De Ster for the first time in some of the photos. It looked so picturesque and so very Dutch! I looked forward to seeing it in person.

Once I moved here, I didn’t forget the windmill, but I didn’t know where it was located. I never came across it in my wanderings of the city and was starting to think it was further outside the city center. (To be honest, I also didn’t bother to research its location, since I had other locations to explore.) It became one of those things that I thought about in passing, but since we have a windmill right here in easy walking distance, it somehow didn’t seem quite so urgent.

Then, on Saturday, as we were heading out to see the fierljeppen competition, I had one of those lucky moments of serendipity! There, on the very same road we were walking down to get to the competition, was De Molen De Ster! It was even more attractive and idyllic than I had realized. It was also much closer to town than I had ever realized, but it’s also on a side of town I’ve yet to really explore. I’m such an East person. The whole street is really quite interesting and attractive, so I’m determined to go over there again soon. Seeing this reminded me of how much more I’ve got to explore here in my own city!

  1. I am not so crazy about windmills but here in Schiedam, you just cant miss them. There are at least 7 windmills here so whenever there’s someone visiting, it is very handy that you just take them there to get their picture taken.

    • It’s not quite the same thrill anymore, as I’m getting used to them, but it was still nice to finally see this one that I’ve known about for so long. Especially on such a pretty day! I’m glad to have another to add to my list for future friends visiting to see.

  2. I never get tired of them! While visiting Tammy(Canadutch) this weekend I went over to the windmills in Kinderdijk..I happily snapped away while it rained. This is a beautiful shot!

    • We were planning on going to Kinderdijk while my parents were here, but the weather, among other things kept stopping us. We kept holding out for a nicer day. 😉 I still want to go, though. I remember seeing Tammy’s photos earlier this year and was impressed by it all.

  3. If you don’t know that side of town yet check out the nearby Kanaalstraat with all kinds of turkish / moroccan shops. I think you’ll like it!

    • It’s for exactly that reason that I’ve been meaning to head over there. Once again, before moving here, I’d seen a photo project showcasing Amsterdamsestraatweg and was interested in some of the shops I saw there. If it stops raining, maybe I’ll go check out Kanaalstraat finally this weekend. Thanks for the recommendation.

  4. How nice to almost bump into it by accident!! Beautiful mill. DO you know if it’s still working, if you can buy flour there? Do post more about it if you get a chance to visit it!

    • It’s funny how great little spots can seem to pop up out of nowhere, even if you know a city well. Utrecht is relatively small, so it’s easy to see a lot of it — and I have! — but I keep finding new spots to fall in love with. Of course, I also keep finding new things to love about the spots I thought I new really well. I think that’s the joy of travel, in general, no matter how far or close you go. I enjoyed looking through your blog and look forward to looking a little closer. Some of those recipes look delicious, too! Thanks for stopping by.

  5. Last week I went to Kinderdijk with my parents where they have the largest collection of windmills in one area (the Dutch, not my parents). I still find windmills really impressive even after being here for a few years now.
