The snow is really coming down right now! Big fluffy flakes! It’s really quite pretty. Despite being the last weekend before Christmas, it’s all very very quiet, too. Not many people out and about yet. In fact, this morning as I was looking out our front window, I was surprised that there were no footprints to be seen. Just smooth white snow. Well, except for one track, which I like to refer to as the Dutch Footprint:
Yes, a single bicycle track (on the sidewalk, for some reason). When the inclement weather arrives, and I see the Dutch out on their bicycles, I always think of the famous saying of Herodotus: “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
In the meantime, since I am still without a bike, I’ll be riding shanks’ pony instead and hoofing it over to Albert Hein in a short while, so I can get the makings for some erwtensoep (split pea soup). Perfect for a cold, snowy day!
It snowed today! I knew that it was forecast, but I honestly didn’t expect to get much if any. Last year we had a few days of snow, but it was always light and quickly melted away. Today, however, it was not only an inch or so thick (I know, I know, that’s not much for some areas, but it is here!), but it has actually stuck around for most of the day.
Our terrace had a nice covering of snow this morning, but the back garden didn’t seem to hold on to any at all. The bike was probably the only thing with any real snow coverage back there!
Tomorrow is just supposed to be cold, but they’re saying we might get some more snow on Saturday. We’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, tomorrow night I think we’re going to go to the Spoorweg (Railway) Museum for their grand opening of the Winter Station, complete with (indoor) ice skating.
Snieuw! We finally got some that stuck!
We’ve had snow in the past, but it never really stuck at all. However, when I woke up this morning, there was a light dusting of snow on the ground. I missed the actual snow falling, but it was nice to see the bit of white on the ground. It’s all gone now, of course, but ultimately, I think that’s a good thing when you have to walk everywhere! As it was, G saw a couple of bikes slipping and sliding today when he went out this morning. There are bound to be some icy patches this evening, too, when it starts to get below freezing again.
I don’t know that we’ll get any more snow. I think we’re expecting fairly clear, if cold, weather for the next few days. Not surprisingly, I’ve been in the mood to knit recently. Brrrr!
